For Emmy Rossum, 'Furious' Resonates With Her Own Life Experiences

Among the reasons that led Emmy Rossum to accept the role of Alice Black in Furious, one stands out for its honesty: the actress says she has a personal attraction to characters who live in morally gray areas, pushed to the extreme — and she does not hide that this is directly connected to her own life story.

"I’m definitely drawn to characters who live in a moral gray zone and are pushed to the extreme," Rossum said in an exclusive interview with Omelete. According to her, this kind of characterization — neither fully heroic nor fully villainous — is what most sparks her interest as an actress, far beyond the classic hero-versus-villain structure that Fury playfully deconstructs.

The statement carries even more weight when Rossum talks about characters who go through desperate situations. "And [I’m interested in] people who have been in situations of depression or, or traumatic ones, who persevere and don’t let that define them, or, you know, control them. I think that feels profound to me and like something that resonates with me, for sure, and feels familiar to me — I mean, it resonates with my own life."

That comment connects directly with the way Rossum describes Alice: a character whose pain is not just a narrative trait, but something the actress approaches with emotional familiarity. According to her, understanding this kind of survival without letting suffering shape the character’s entire identity was essential to building the Alice who appears on screen.

Rossum had already shown signs of this interest before when recalling her time as Fiona Gallagher in Shameless, another character shaped by trauma.
