In an interview with Polygon, the creator of The X-Files, Chris Carter, revealed that Gillian Anderson (Scully) and David Duchovny (Mulder) are expected to appear in the series reboot directed by Ryan Coogler.

"At least Gillian, I think, will appear in Coogler's version. And I'm assuming David will too, so you'll see Mulder and Scully there," Carter said. Although he has not yet seen the reboot, the statement suggests that the new series takes place in the same continuity as the original production, which ran for 11 seasons and two movies.

Carter also commented on the possibility of continuing the original story on his own. "I would love to do either another reboot, or another movie. My ideas going forward are big ideas. Ryan Coogler's version of The X-Files will be produced by Chris Carter, the series' creator. Francine Maisler, casting director for Sinners, is handling the cast for the production. Carter first revealed in a podcast interview in 2023 that he had spoken with Coogler, who would "reimagine The X-Files with a diverse cast," adding: "He'll have his work cut out for him, because we've already covered a lot of ground."

The original series aired from 1993 to May 2002 on Fox. A tenth season of six episodes aired from January to February 2016. Following the success of that revival, The X-Files returned for an eleventh season of ten episodes, which aired from January to March 2018.

The plot follows FBI special agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), who investigate the so-called "X-Files": unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena. Mulder is a talented profiler and a passionate believer in the supernatural, convinced of the existence of extraterrestrials and government conspiracies to hide the truth.
