FX has announced Legends, a miniseries starring Charlie Hunnam that reunites the original cast of Sons of Anarchy playing fictionalized versions of themselves.
The story follows the actors from the original series at a fan convention more than a decade after the show ended, when the line between real life and fiction begins to blur and they must face a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they went through on the series.
In addition to Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi are also returning. The cast may still add new names in the coming weeks. The concept gets around the main obstacle to a traditional reunion: most of the main characters died over the original series’ seven seasons, including Jax Teller himself, played by Hunnam.
The series was developed by Hunnam and Jonathan Groff, who serve as executive producers alongside Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn. Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is not involved in the project. The production comes from FX Productions and 20th Television, and will air on FX and Hulu.
FX Entertainment president Nick Grad said Hunnam’s idea was immediately compelling. "Charlie’s talents are on full display as writer, actor, and executive producer, leading this real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know."
Sons of Anarchy was a ratings hit for FX, running for 92 episodes across seven seasons. The series spawned the spin-off Mayans M.C., which ran for five seasons between 2018 and 2023.
