The fifth season of Outer Banks finally wrapped up by delivering a happy ending for the Pogues, after a rough season finale in the fourth year, when they lost JJ (Rudy Pankow). With that in mind, we’ve rounded up what happened to the show’s characters at the end of the series.

John B Routledge

After the death of his best friend JJ, John B (Chase Stokes) hit rock bottom after the Dubrovnik mission went wrong, leading to the Pogues’ arrest and deportation. With no prospects and a baby on the way with Sarah (Madelyn Cline), he finds a bundle of smuggled marijuana in the ocean and, with Rafe’s help (Drew Starkey), sells it at a discount to local dealer Barry (Nicholas Cirillo). As a result, he becomes a target of drug kingpin Julio Valdez, the original owner of the shipment.

With Julio’s men threatening Sarah’s life unless he pays the full value of the stolen goods, he tries to rob the safe at Topper’s house (Austin North) with Pope (Jonathan Daviss), who knows nothing about it, and the situation spirals out of control. Eventually, John B teams up with Sheriff Shoupe (Cullen Moss) in an attempt to bring Julio down.

Later, John B came up with the idea of chartering a plane to Azerbaijan in search of the Blue Crown and supported Kiara (Madison Bailey) when she decided to test the crown’s supposed magical power to bring the dead back to life, in a desperate attempt to see JJ again.

John B saved Kiara twice in the final season: first by diving in to reach her after Groff (J. Anthony Crane) throws her into the sea on the night of the masquerade ball, and later, together with Sarah and Pope, by rescuing her after she killed Groff and their boat started sinking during the hurricane.

In the end, using part of the Royal Merchant gold, John B bought back the land where he used to live and rebuilt his father’s house, and a year later, he married Sarah in the backyard, with the couple’s baby present.

Sarah Cameron

While searching for the Blue Crown with her friends, Sarah also went through her pregnancy, giving birth to a baby boy at the end, whom she and John B name JJ in honor of their friend.

She also patched things up with her brother Rafe (Drew Starkey) and reconnected with her younger sister Wheezie (Julia Antonelli), in addition to tracking down her mother and discovering that she didn’t abandon her children — it was all a scheme by her husband, Ward (Charles Esten).

Kiara Carrera

Kiara had one of the main arcs of the fifth season, largely because she had to deal with the death of her boyfriend, JJ Maybank. She even confronts JJ’s father, Chandler Groff (Crane), in Dubrovnik, but hesitates to kill him — though she ultimately goes through with it in the final episode.

Driven by her grief over JJ’s death, Kiara clung to the old belief in the Blue Crown’s power to bring the dead back to life, and she tries to summon JJ using the object. Instead, the item creates a sphere of light amid a meteor shower and triggers a sequence of memories of every moment she shared with her boyfriend, from when they first met on the beach as children.

After that, she used part of the money from the Royal Merchant gold to buy back the Maybank house, renovate it, and grow a garden. On top of that, she was also Sarah and John B’s maid of honor at their wedding, and she also set out to pursue her dream of becoming a marine biologist.

Pope Heyward

Pope (Daviss) had a very hard time dealing with what happened in Morocco, a situation made worse by the fact that he spent a month in jail after the group returned to Outer Banks, a consequence of assaulting a police officer to save JJ in Season 4.

Unable to process the fact that he killed the mercenary at the end of Season 4 — even though he acted in self-defense — Pope decided to numb the pain with marijuana.

He started to become himself again when Cleo (Carlacia Grant) returned, which motivated him to reclaim his role as the group’s “brain.” He recreated the old scytale from drawings and deciphered its messages, orchestrated the landslide in Azerbaijan that ambushed rival Finch and his group, saved his father from drowning during the hurricane and, later, calculated the exact spot in the ocean where the Royal Merchant gold had sunk, giving the Pogues a much-needed win — and the means for an excellent life.

After a failed attempt to propose to Cleo at the start of the season, Pope nailed it on the second try and got engaged to her in the final episode. The couple moved into Tannyhill, putting the mansion back in the hands of a Tanny — Pope himself — who also walked Sarah down the aisle at her wedding to John B.

Cleo

After being extradited to the Bahamas twice, Cleo (Grant) found a way to return. The first time was after the Pogues came back from Dubrovnik. The second was when she stayed behind to delay Shoupe and his officer while John B, Sarah, Kiara, and Pope ran to board the jet to Azerbaijan.

Her tactic included blowing up John B’s van, the Twinkie, to block the road. In the end, with the police closing in, she can’t board in time. She is arrested and then deported, with no right to return. Using money from the Royal Merchant gold, she is able to hire a lawyer to reverse the situation, allowing her to become an American citizen.

In the end, she moved with Pope into his family home, Tannyhill, and was Sarah and John B’s maid of honor at their wedding.

Rafe Cameron

Rafe (Starkey) continued his redemption journey, which began at the end of Season 4. Now also a Pogue, after losing his money to Groff, he becomes an ally to the group. He shelters Sarah and John B in his apartment before being evicted, helps John B try to sell the stolen drugs, and reconciles with Sofia (Fiona Palomo) by proposing to her a second time.

Rafe became a wanted man after Groff revealed the secret about Peterkin’s death to Sheriff Shoupe; Sofia stayed by his side and ended up being arrested for helping him.

During the hurricane in the final episode, Rafe broke her out of jail, saved Shoupe, who was trapped under a fallen tree, and also saved John B, Sarah, Pope (Daviss), and Kiara (Bailey), risking his own life to light the lighthouse and keep them from crashing into the shore.

Shortly afterward, he left for South America with Sofia, receiving a warm goodbye from the Pogues. It wasn’t clear whether his new friends managed to secretly send the couple some gold, since they left with nothing. A year later, Rafe was likely still a fugitive, since he did not attend his sister’s wedding, but he did appear making a video call to the party during the end credits.

Chandler Groff

Character breaks disappointing Outer Banks record after 4 seasons

After killing his own son in cold blood, Chandler Groff was arrested for the murders of JJ and Hollis, but the prosecutor did not have enough evidence to formally charge him, so he was released.

Kiara tries to kill the villain twice, succeeding the second time, and he ends up drowning in the middle of the hurricane in the series finale.
