Who Killed Hal Jordan in 'Lanterns'? Final Episode Explains

The last episode of Lanterns aired this Sunday (4) and answered the biggest question raised throughout the series: who killed Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), the original Green Lantern?

Jordan is found dead in the very first episode of the season, and we spend the next seven wondering who would be responsible for murdering the (apparently) first superhero on planet Earth. Many suspects emerged, including John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), who was then chosen to replace him and assume the position of "holder" Green Lantern of the sector.

The final episode finally gives us that answer and, as a bonus, confirms one of the theories most widely circulated by fans on social media in recent weeks. And the explanation is far less sensational than some had imagined.

Who killed Hal Jordan?

The latest episode of Green Lantern reveals that the person who killed Hal Jordan was Kerry (Kelly Macdonald), the hero's romantic partner and sheriff of the town of Rushville. She committed the murder after the former Green Lantern revealed that he knew her son, Noah (Shea Pritchard), was a Cosmic Hunter.

It all began when Jordan was attacked by a mysterious group who set his house on fire. He tries to escape, but ends up trapped in the fire until he is saved by Noah, in a move similar to what Zoe (Poorna Jagannathan), the other Cosmic Hunter from Earth, did years ago when she saved John from certain death.

By saving Hal and rebuilding his charred body, Noah ends up revealing his true identity and asks the hero not to tell Kerry anything. Knowing the murderous and manipulative nature of the Cosmic Hunters, Hal decides to talk to the sheriff to convince her to run away with him to stay away from what Noah could do to Earth, or even what the Guardians could do to the boy when they discovered his identity.

Kerry, however, reveals she knew about everything from the beginning and argues with her beloved. When Hal insists they should leave and leave Noah behind, the sheriff snaps and ends up shooting the former Green Lantern, who dies instantly.

Everything you need to know about Lanterns

The series follows a young John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and a veteran Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) as they become embroiled in a dark, earthly mystery while investigating a murder in the heart of the USA. It's speculated that the murder victim is a member of the Green Lantern Corps, a kind of galactic police force, and that's how Stewart will acquire the ring that grants members of the group the power to create objects made of green light.

The series cast also includes Garrett Dillahunt (No Country for Old Men), Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire), Cary Christopher (Weapons), and Paula Patton (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), as well as Ulrich Thomsen as the villain Sinestro.

Nathan Fillion will appear as Guy Gardner, one of the Green Lanterns – a role he previously played in the Superman movie. With eight episodes confirmed, the production is helmed by Damon Lindelof (Lost, Watchmen), Chris Mundy (Ozark), and Tom King.
