Prime Video Acquires Exclusive Streaming Rights of the Emmys
Six-year agreement ends rotation between American broadcasters.
Prime Video will be the new global home of the Emmys. Amazon has signed a six-year deal with the Television Academy to stream the annual awards ceremony on its streaming service starting with the next editions. The contract is estimated at over $120 million in total, with payments ranging from $20 million to $25 million per year.
Despite being streamed on Prime Video, the Emmy Awards will be free to watch, with no subscription required. This decision was considered non-negotiable by the Television Academy, which sought to broaden the ceremony's reach and prevent the event from being restricted to subscribers.
The agreement also ends the rotation system between ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC, which had broadcast the ceremony in the United States since 1995.
In a statement to Deadline, Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, said the company wants to transform the Emmys into a "global event," increase viewership, and bring the awards show closer to a younger audience. He also stated that the company intends to work with the Television Academy to pursue changes in the production and format of the ceremony.
