Kratos Actor in 'God of War' Series Will be Replaced After Set Accident

The God of War series will have a new lead. After being paused due to an accident involving Ryan Hurst, who plays Kratos, the production decided to cast a new actor for the role. The information comes from Deadline.

The actor underwent surgery, and the recovery schedule made his expected return in mid-August impossible — the expectation is that it would take him up to 10 months to be able to return to work. Deadline says Hurst injured his biceps, went straight into surgery, and is already under observation. Because of this, Amazon, together with Sony, decided to cast a new actor, who should be announced soon.

According to Deadline, the series will likely undergo complete reshoots, since the actor set to play Atreus, Kratos’ son, is young Callum Vinson, and his appearance would change quickly if new filming were delayed. The idea now is to restart production in October after preparing the new lead in August. The site also says that four full episodes had already been completed and that the plan is to film two seasons at once.

Filming was taking place in Vancouver. The game adaptation still does not have an official premiere date set by Amazon Prime Video, which is producing the series.

Everything you need to know about the God of War series

Ronald D. Moore, known for hits such as Battlestar Galactica, Outlander and For All Mankind, will be the showrunner of the series, which will have at least two seasons to adapt God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarök. The plot focuses on Kratos and his son Atreus. The cast had Ryan Hurst as Kratos for the time being, but after suffering a serious biceps injury and needing surgery whose long recovery time would prevent filming from continuing, Hurst was removed from the role.

The cast of the God of War series includes Teresa Palmer as Sif, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, and Max Parker as Heimdall. Young Callum Vinson, known for The Night Agent, will play Atreus.

The God Of War franchise, which began its journey in 2005 on the PlayStation 2, follows the story of former Spartan warrior Kratos. Driven by revenge against Ares, the God of War, Kratos faces supernatural challenges while trying to change his fate. After a trilogy of games set in Greece, the series moved to Norse mythology in 2018 with an older Kratos, acting alongside his son Atreus, to face a pantheon made up of Odin, Thor, and other gods.

Prime Video has not yet announced a release date.
