The CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Ravi Ahuja, said he still doesn’t know when the next Spider-Man movie will hit theaters. At a conference in New York, as reported by Variety, the executive spoke about the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and admitted that its box office performance exceeded even the studio’s most optimistic expectations.

"We obviously didn’t see this coming. We thought it would do very well, but we didn’t know it would do this well," Ahuja said. The film, which is expected to end its theatrical run as the highest-grossing domestic release in U.S. history, has surpassed Avatar: The Way of Water in the global rankings and is about to overtake Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

For Ahuja, the emotional pull of Brand New Day explains the phenomenon. "The movie itself is very emotional. A little different from what some of the more recent superhero movies have been. It’s still a superhero movie, with lots of big action scenes, very entertaining. But it’s emotional. Some people leave the theater crying, and that clearly resonated with audiences."

When asked about Spider-Man 5, Ahuja didn’t give a direct answer and only confirmed what is already known: the film still has no set release date. "We still don’t have a date for it. Usually, a few years, but there’s a Spider-Verse movie [Beyond the Spider-Verse] coming out next year."
