'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Becomes Fastest Film to Surpass $500 Million in the U.S.

The opening week of Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to break records. The film directed by Destin Daniel Cretton has become the fastest to surpass the $500 million mark at the domestic box office, reaching the milestone in just seven days — beating the eight days it took Avengers: Endgame in 2019 to hit the same mark.

The feature starring Tom Holland and Zendaya is now the 23rd film in North American history to top $500 million, a list led by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with $936.6 million. The previous speed record for the milestone belonged to The Force Awakens itself, which took ten days, while Spider-Man: No Way Home needed 12 days.

This Thursday, Brand New Day is expected to gross around $27 million or more in the U.S./Canada, which would raise its cumulative total to approximately $508.8 million. On Wednesday, the film had already posted the second-best performance ever for a non-opening Wednesday, behind only the $38 million earned by The Force Awakens on December 23, 2015.

With its second weekend arriving, Brand New Day could come close to or even break the record for the best second weekend in history, currently held by The Force Awakens with $149.2 million.

In addition to Tom Holland returning as the lead, Jacob Batalon will be back as Ned, and Zendaya returns for the new Spider-Man movie as MJ. Among the new additions, Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) joins as Jean Grey.

Another confirmed cast member is Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, marking the hero’s debut in Marvel films. Also joining him, Mark Ruffalo is in the movie as Hulk and will transform, for the first time in the MCU, into Gray Hulk, a bigger and more dangerous version of the giant.

The official synopsis for Brand New Day has been released:  "It's a BRAND NEW DAY for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control. But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them."

Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is directing the project. Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna, who wrote Spider-Man: No Way Home, are also responsible for the upcoming film. 

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters.
