Does 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Have a Secret Villain? Find Out Who the Film’s Antagonist Is

Ever since the marketing campaign for Spider-Man: Brand New Day began, there has been plenty of talk about who the movie’s main villain would be. Hulk, Scorpion, and Sadie Sink’s mysterious character were all on the list of possible antagonists. Now that we’ve seen the film, we can finally tell you who really turned Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) life upside down in the feature.

The film's story takes place four years after the neighborhood hero’s last appearance. Fighting crime in a New York that no longer even knows his name, he devotes himself entirely to protecting the city — a full-time Spider-Man — but as the demands grow, the pressure triggers a surprising physical transformation that threatens his very existence, while a strange pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced.
To get straight to the point, we can rule out Scorpion: The Hand’s ninjas, Tombstone, Boomerang, and Tarantula are not the movie’s main villains. Some of them, in fact, only have a single scene in the film. The real driving force of the plot is indeed Sadie Sink’s character, who is, yes, the mutant Jean Grey. She tears through New York searching for something that apparently no one knows the whereabouts of.
That said, it’s no secret that Marvel heroes are rarely the villains in stories from the House of Ideas, and this time is no different. As many had already theorized, the one truly pulling the strings behind the film’s evil actions is the Department of Damage Control. The government agency that deals with superhuman-related matters has a certain tendency to go after them, whether heroes or villains — it’s worth remembering that they tried to arrest Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Magnum, and Spider-Man himself when his identity was revealed in No Way Home (2021).
This time, Damage Control appears to ask Spider-Man for help in containing a new threat. However, the organization itself was largely responsible for that threat — Jean Grey — doing everything she does in the plot.

In addition to Tom Holland returning as the lead, Jacob Batalon will once again play Ned, and Zendaya returns for the new Spider-Man movie as MJ. Among the new additions, we have Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) confirmed in a role that has not yet been specified (but has been heavily speculated to be Jean Grey).
Another confirmed name is Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, marking the hero’s debut in Marvel films. In addition, Mark Ruffalo is in the movie as Hulk and will transform, for the first time in the MCU, into Gray Hulk, a larger and more dangerous version of the giant.
Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is directing the project. Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna, who wrote Spider-Man: No Way Home, are also responsible for the upcoming film.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in theaters on July 31, 2026.
