In an interview with Collider while promoting The Dog Stars, Ridley Scott confirmed that his next film will be Treasure Island, with Hugh Jackman set to play Long John Silver.
The director also revealed that he is in talks with Hugh Grant and actor Owen Cooper (Adolescence) to play young Jim Hawkins. Filming begins on November 1.
The project, with a script by Jack Thorne (Adolescence, Enola Holmes 3), is an adaptation of the classic by Robert Louis Stevenson and follows a boy who, after finding a treasure map, embarks on a dangerous sea voyage and comes face to face with the legendary pirate Long John Silver.
Scott, who had not directed a science fiction film since Alien: Covenant (2017), returns to the big screen with The Dog Stars, a post-apocalyptic epic starring Josh Brolin, Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce and Benedict Wong.
The story takes place after a devastating pandemic and follows a pilot trying to find meaning in life amid the chaos. Alongside other survivors, he deals with loss and uncertainty, while small elements of everyday life help keep hope alive.
According to Scott, the film stands apart from other post-apocalyptic works by focusing less on destruction and more on rebuilding and the purpose of moving forward. The idea is to show how it is still possible to find hope even after great tragedies.
The film opens in theaters on August 29.
