'GTA 6' Character Switching Will be Limited in Missions
In an interview with Famitsu, co-director Rob Nelson explains that the mechanic will depend on the narrative context and will be automatic in some scenes.
In an interview with Famitsu, Rockstar North co-director Rob Nelson explained that switching between protagonists Jason and Lucia in Grand Theft Auto VI will be limited at certain points in the story.
Unlike GTA V, where switching was freely available most of the time, the new game saves the mechanic for specific moments depending on the mission and the narrative context.
"During the story, there are times when you can't switch characters for some reason," Nelson said. "There are missions where you can switch freely, but there are sections where we want you to experience the story from a particular character's perspective, like in GTA V, so we limit the switching."
As an example, Nelson cited a mission early in the game in which the team decided Jason should take the lead because of his military experience. During the bank robbery getaway seen in the extended Netflix trailer, meanwhile, the switch is automatic: after shooting at police officers as Jason from the back seat, the player takes control of Lucia behind the wheel.
In the trailer's final mission, where the couple is attacked, switching will be completely available, according to Nelson. Outside missions, however, players will be able to switch between the two protagonists at any time, as other previews have already revealed.
