Rockstar Games has released its modding policy for Grand Theft Auto VI, making it clear that it will not allow anyone to profit from the game. The company published the rules on its website, anticipating the inevitable emergence of mods and servers once the title is released to the public.

The restrictions include predictable items such as bans on pornography, bullying, use of third-party intellectual property, and advocacy of violent extremism. Rockstar also prohibits its games from being made available on platforms where they have never been released and prevents the addition of characters, maps, or assets from other franchises.

The point that is likely to generate the most discussion is the explicit prohibition of unauthorized commercialization. The policy forbids the exchange of real money within mods for cryptocurrencies or traditional currencies, real-money betting on modified content, and the promotion of third-party sponsored content.

This harms the GTA RP scene, which features cities that host various types of different events, some including sponsored content from third parties. In Brazil, the Cidade Alta server even ran a campaign with iFood where characters could become delivery drivers.

However, it will still be a long time before the online mode arrives, and also before the PC version. Until then, Rockstar might change its mind, but it's very likely that the situation will become complicated for the RP servers.

Everything you need to know about GTA VI

Once again developed by Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto VI is the first GTA in thirteen years, following the astronomical success of GTA V, released in 2013. The franchise is one of the most successful in video game history.

The story of GTA VI takes place in an open world based on Florida, in the United States. Its setting is Vice City, a fictional version of Miami that debuted in the first GTA and later got its own game with 2002’s GTA Vice City.

GTA VI arrives on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026. A PC version has not yet been announced.
