Who is Jim, the first Synthetic Man of VisionQuest?

During the charity event that Vision, Tommy, and Lisa crash in search of Butcher Bird, the synthetic serial killer who invaded the hero's mind when he underwent a reboot at the end of the third episode, we are introduced to Katerina Wells, CEO of Markridge Biotech, a pioneer in AI, who created the first stable synthetic consciousness, later sold to Stark Industries.

The investigation into the killer reveals that she had already murdered Richard Gaines, Rebecca Edwards, and Simon Moorehouse, members of Wells' team. Of the group, only Jo Carrington, a scientist and founder of Markridge Biotech, died of natural causes in 2008. During the investigation, Vision and company discover that the killer stole blood, fingerprints, and an eye from the victim and decide to go after Katerina.

At the event, we meet Jim, the first synthezoid ever created, or "Synthetic Man." He is presented as the first autonomous AI ever created, the work of scientist Phineas Horton, called the "great-grandfather of robotics" and "real-life Gepetto" by Wells. She explains that Horton created a source code that was the genesis of all artificial intelligences that came after.

Vision then explains that Jim was the first, a miraculous but flawed experiment. We understand that he was deactivated after a series of fire accidents. It is the synthezoid character that is on fire in the painting of the house that exists in Vision's mind. He explains that his mind was already obsolete from its conception, with its inability to process complex emotions, which ended up triggering the gears rapidly, flooding his solar cells with oxygen until he was consumed by fire.

"Jim died from 'feeling so much,'" Tommy says. The young man questions Vision about why the same thing didn't happen to his version with Wanda and the Avengers. He explains that Vision had a unique advantage: a supernatural power source, the Mind Stone, which helped him navigate the complexities of the mind and heart. He says he still has some of the power from his other version and that the AIs in his head help keep him grounded. Tommy concludes that one thing was missing for Jim: a family.

VisionQuest places Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch, at the thematic heart of the series, discussing whether synthetic beings can love and what family truly is. This story will continue in upcoming episodes.

Jim Hammond has appeared in the MCU before

The series closely follows the character's history in the comics. The character made his debut in 1939 in the comics and is considered the first hero to use the name Human Torch - decades before Johnny Storm, the Human Torch of the Fantastic Four.

The character's introduction isn't the first in the MCU, as he appears in a scene from Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). During the 1943 Stark Expo, a mysterious humanoid figure is presented in a capsule as the "Synthetic Man." Although the film doesn't officially identify the character as Jim Hammond, the sequence is considered a reference to the comic book hero, including his appearance.
