According to exclusive information from Deadline, Netflix has preemptively acquired the dramatic thriller The Apology. The project, which has already been ordered for two seasons, will star Gwyneth Paltrow and be directed by Thomas Vinterberg.
The purchase comes at a time of restructuring in the streaming service. After a week marked by the dismissal of approximately one thousand employees and the departure of Bela Bajaria, replaced by Peter Rice as chief content officer, the head of scripted series for the US and Canada, Jinny Howe, led the negotiation. Sources indicate that Rice, who assumed the position today, did not participate in the decision regarding the series.
In the film, Paltrow plays Evelyn, a woman whose son was murdered 18 years ago in a case that shocked the country. When a stranger comes forward and confesses to the crime, the family finally glimpses justice. The situation changes drastically when they discover that the murderer may receive a reduced sentence. Faced with this unbearable truth, Evelyn and her husband, Caleb, decide to take matters into their own hands.
Joe Murtagh wrote the script and also serves as showrunner. Vinterberg makes his US television directorial debut, and Paltrow takes on her first leading role on television. The production is by A24 in partnership with Cut To.
The acquisition of two direct seasons symbolically recalls Netflix's beginnings in original production with House of Cards in 2011. Now, the platform seeks to regain dominance in a market that closely follows the growth of engagement.
