Chris Brown was sentenced to eight months in prison in England, but will not have to serve the sentence in jail. The court suspended the sentence for 12 months after the singer pleaded guilty to assaulting a music producer in a London nightclub in February 2023.
Before announcing the decision, Judge Tony Baumgartner stated that the artist's fame and commercial success do not entitle him to special treatment under the law: "The law applies equally to everyone," he said.
The incident occurred at the Tape London nightclub, where Brown struck producer Abraham Diaw twice in the head with a tequila bottle. According to the British prosecution, the assault continued while the victim tried to flee, and Diaw was also kicked while on the ground. He required hospital treatment for head and knee injuries.
Brown was arrested in May 2025 when he returned to the UK for a performance in Manchester. In July, he pleaded guilty to charges of participating in a violent brawl. Charges of assault, grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon were dropped. Omololu Akinlolu, a rapper known as HoodyBaby and also charged in the case, received a four-month suspended prison sentence of 12 months.
