'10 Things I Hate About You' Musical Coming From Lena Dunham & Carly Rae Jepsen
A musical adaptation of the 1999's classic is on the works.
Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepsen are joining forces to bring 10 Things I Hate About You to Broadway. According to a Variety report, a musical based off of director Gil Junger's take on William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew is set to have its opening night on August 17, 2027.
While Dunham is on writing duties alongside Jessica Huang, Jepsen is on charge with lyrics and music with Ethan Gruska. Coreographing and directing the show are Christopher Wheeldon and Tom Kitt. Finally, Mike Bosner, who produced Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, is on board as a main producer.
Led by Julia Stiles as Kat Stratford and Heath Ledger as Patrick Verona, the 1999 film is one of the most popular rom-coms to date and one of the many inspired by a Shakespeare work. The film grossed $53.5 million worldwide and it later became a cult classic for the genre, with Kat's character often mentioned as a progressive take on female stereotypes that used to be the norm for teen romance flicks.
The official musical's description states that the show revolves around “growing up, discovering yourself, and refusing to live by others’ expectations. Amid the crushes, cliques and teenage angst, two sisters set out to define themselves on their own terms.”
