William Orbit, Producer for Madonna, U2, and More, Dies at 69

William Orbit, the 69-year-old Grammy-winning producer who worked with Madonna, U2, Blur, Britney Spears, Pink, and All Saints, has died. The news was confirmed by family members in a statement posted on social media, saying the artist passed away at home on July 23. The cause of death was not disclosed. 

One of the most influential producers in pop and electronic music, Orbit made history by helming Ray of Light (1998), the album that marked a new phase in Madonna’s career. Blending pop, electronic music, trip hop, and techno, the record became a worldwide success, sold millions of copies, and won three Grammy Awards, with many considering it one of the singer’s best works.

His partnership with Madonna also resulted in other standout projects, such as the hit “Beautiful Stranger,” which won another Grammy, as well as contributions to the album Music (2000) and six tracks on MDNA (2012). Throughout his career, Orbit also produced Blur’s acclaimed album13 and collaborated with artists such as No Doubt, Robbie Williams, and Chris Brown.

Following confirmation of his death, artists who worked with the producer paid tribute on social media. Mel C said it was "an honor" to share projects with Orbit, while Skin, lead singer of Skunk Anansie, thanked him for the legacy he left behind. Sister Bliss, of Faithless, described the producer as a "genius and pioneer" of electronic music.
