According to Page Six , Michael Bay will return to direct Transformers. The filmmaker, responsible for the first five films in the franchise, will return to the director's chair for the eighth installment, while Steven Spielberg will take on a more active role in the creative direction of the project.

Spielberg has been chosen by Paramount Pictures and Hasbro to lead the creative aspects of the new film and will continue as executive producer, alongside producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. According to Deadline, Bay reportedly read the latest script and met with Spielberg earlier this week before agreeing to return to the franchise.

The film will be based on a script by Jason Fuchs, but story details are still being kept secret. The only known information about the plot is that it will be set in the present day. As the project is still in development, there is no information about the cast.

Bay's return comes as Paramount seeks to revitalize the franchise, which had more modest results with Bumblebee and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Spielberg and Bay played key roles in the early stages of the series: Spielberg was creatively involved in the first two films, while Bay directed the first five.
