'The Odyssey' Breaks 'Deadpool & Wolverine' Historical Record; Learn More
The Odyssey becomes the highest-grossing adults-only film in history

Christopher Nolan has achieved yet another historic box office milestone. The Odyssey has surpassed Deadpool & Wolverine and become the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history. The news was reported by DiscussingFilm this Wednesday (19).
The feature had already crossed the $1.3 billion mark at the worldwide box office and has now overtaken the roughly $1.338 billion earned by Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024.
With the new record, The Odyssey leaves behind other R-rated hits such as Joker ($1.08 billion) and Oppenheimer ($975.8 million).
The film has also already become the biggest success of Nolan’s career, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises, and it leads IMAX history in box office revenue, with more than $289 million in the format

Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film is yet another adaptation of Homer’s classic heroic poem, a continuation of the Iliad that tells the story of Odysseus, who spends 10 years trying to return home to Ithaca after victory in the Trojan War. Enraged, the god of the seas, Poseidon, does everything he can to prevent him from returning to his wife, Penelope.
Matt Damon plays Odysseus. Anne Hathaway plays the character’s wife, Penelope. Meanwhile, Tom Holland plays Telemachus, Ulysses’ son, with Zendaya playing the goddess Athena, Charlize Theron as Calypso, Benny Safdie as Agamemnon, and Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra — or Clitemnestra —, Agamemnon’s wife.
The Odyssey is now playing in theaters.
