'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' is Expected to Become Sony's 2nd Biggest Opening

According to Deadline, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to gross around $465 million worldwide in its opening weekend, which would mark the biggest debut of the year and Sony’s second-biggest opening in its entire history, behind only Spider-Man: No Way Home ($600.5 million). 

Pre-sales in North America have already reached $80 million, close to what was posted by No Way Home. Domestic projections range between $195 million and $250 million, which would already make it the best performance of 2026, surpassing Toy Story 5.

The film’s appeal goes beyond Marvel’s traditional audience: the presence of Zendaya and Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) in the cast has been drawing in women under 25 in particular.

The feature currently holds an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, slightly below the 93% of No Way Home. In China, where the previous film was not released, expectations are that Brand New Day will gross around $45 million.

In addition to Tom Holland returning as the lead, Jacob Batalon will once again play Ned, and Zendaya returns for the new Spider-Man movie as MJ. New additions include Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), confirmed for a still-unspecified role (though apparently confirmed to be Jean Grey).

Another confirmed cast member is Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, marking the hero's debut in Marvel films. In addition, Mark Ruffalo is in the movie as Hulk and will transform, for the first time in the MCU, into Gray Hulk, a larger and more dangerous version of the giant.

The official synopsis for Brand New Day has been released:  "It's a BRAND NEW DAY for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control. But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them."

Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is directing the project. Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna, who wrote Spider-Man: No Way Home, are also responsible for the upcoming film. 

Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
