'Big Boys' Creator is Developing a Spice Girls Biopic: "Fun Dramedy"

In an interview on the BBC Sounds podcast Sidetracked, Big Boys creator Jack Rooke revealed that he is developing a project about the Spice Girls. He described the production as a "fun dramedy," more than a simple musical biopic.

"There's already a script written by me and a lovely little group of girls and gay people. But that's all I can say, and we don't know what's going to happen with it. Maybe one day, if people want to watch it, it would be amazing," Rooke said.

The screenwriter explained that the British group was the first time he had seen "working-class women being ambitious in British pop culture." He believes a film about the Spice Girls would have the same cultural relevance as Sam Mendes' Beatles project, which is in production this summer.

"If we're going to have these four films about the Beatles, then I think we need a great comedy about the Spice Girls, but that's just me," he joked. "I've said too much already. But that would be my dream and wish."

The statement comes after the Spice Girls celebrated the 30th anniversary of their debut album, Spice, last week. The group also recently secured the streaming rights to Spice World, the 1997 musical comedy starring them.
