In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Johnny Depp discussed the possibility of returning as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 6. The actor has not officially confirmed his participation, but said he would not refuse an invitation from his friend and producer of the franchise, Jerry Bruckheimer.
Depp stated that he only wants to return if the script guarantees a fitting conclusion for the character. "If things are exactly where they need to be in terms of how they're going to end the franchise... the only involvement I really want to have, truly, is just to finish things in the best way possible," he affirmed. "I'd work with Jerry tomorrow for anything. It doesn't matter... if it's Jerry, I trust him."
Bruckheimer had already confirmed in the middle of last year that he had spoken with the actor about the project. At the time, the producer said that Depp would accept the role if he liked the script, which is being written by Jeff Nathanson. Bruckheimer also stated that, if it were up to him, the actor would be in the film, as it was Depp who created the essence of Captain Jack.
Depp starred in the first five films of the franchise, which grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide. The actor's future at Disney became uncertain after his lawsuits and the trial against Amber Heard in 2022. Now, he is trying to revive his Hollywood career with the release of Ebenezer and the Ghosts of Christmas and the thriller Day Drinker, scheduled for 2028.
Released in 2003, Pirates of the Caribbean has grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide. Even with the lukewarm reception of the sequels, the studio remains interested in rebooting the franchise, but so far we don't have an exact date for when that will happen.
