In an interview with Collider during the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, Disney's head of animation, Jared Bush, detailed how the studio is balancing the simultaneous development of Frozen 3 and Frozen 4. The third film is scheduled to premiere on November 24, 2027, with the return of Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, and Jonathan Groff.

Disney's initial idea was to release the two sequels in a short period of time, but plans changed. According to Bush, the team realized they needed to focus on making Frozen 3 the best possible experience in its own right. "That doesn't always mean that everything is buttoned up, but it does mean that you have to be building to something that feels worthy of the end of a franchise that's that important to people," he stated. The priority is to make the audience feel they've watched a complete and satisfying story, without the film seeming like just a bridge to the next one.

Regarding the planning for Frozen 4, Bush was cautious. He stated that, although the studio has a general idea of the franchise's future, the team tries not to delve too deeply into the details so as not to stifle the third film. "If you're so rigid on what [Frozen] 4 might look like, then it could stifle you, and that's not something that I want to do," he explained.

Although both films are in development, the gap between them may not be as short as previously thought. Bush agreed that the difference between Frozen 3 and Frozen 4 should be about three years, but the studio is in no hurry. He cited the billion-dollar box office success of Toy Story 5 and Zootopia 2 after long waiting periods to justify the strategy. "Something I noticed, certainly for Disney Animation, is if the future story is great, it doesn't matter how much time has passed".

Everything you need to know about the future of Frozen

For now, there is no information about a possible live-action adaptation of Frozen, as recently happened with Lilo & Stitch and will happen again in 2026 with Moana.

Although there are still no announced plans for a live-action Frozen, Disney is betting big on the animated franchise. According to filmmaker Jennifer Lee, Frozen 3 and Frozen 4 are being developed at the same time in the writers’ room assembled by the studio.

Frozen 4 is not expected to arrive before 2029.
