Original 'Star Wars' Will Return to Theaters in IMAX For Its 50th Anniversary

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope will return to theaters in 2027 in a special format. The film will arrive on the big screen with IMAX and IMAX 70mm projection as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of its release.

In addition to the film that kicked off the franchise, Lucasfilm also confirmed that Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling and premiering in May of next year, will also arrive in theaters in this format.

Starfighter will be set five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, in a period not yet explored by the franchise's films. At this time, the galaxy will be experiencing a moment of great instability after the fall of the First Order.

There will be no central government controlling the different territories, leaving the inhabitants in the midst of chaos. "It's a time in the galaxy where there is no kind of governing authority or order," explained director Shawn Levy.

The plot follows Kade Auberon, played by Ryan Gosling, a man of humble origins living in a marginalized region of the galaxy. He embarks on an adventure when his destiny intersects with that of a young man played by Flynn Gray and the fastest starfighter ever built.

In addition to Gosling and Flynn, the cast includes names like Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, and Amy Adams. Smith is expected to play the main antagonist, although details about the character have not yet been released.

The screenplay is by Jonathan Tropper, who has worked with Levy on other projects.

Starfighter premieres in theaters on May 28, 2027.
