Michael B. Jordan, Oscar winner for Best Actor for Sinners, will play Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs. Austin Butler, Oscar nominee for Elvis, will play James “Sonny” Crockett. The two had already been in talks for the roles since last year.
The cast also includes Alden Ehrenreich and Whitney Peak, the latter as Jordan’s romantic interest. Camila Morrone has also been added to the main cast.
The official synopsis describes the film as an exploration of the “glamour and corruption of Miami in the mid-1980s,” inspired by the pilot episode and the first season of the original TV series. The screenplay is by Dan Gilroy, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft. The film will be directed by Joseph Kosinski (F1).
The original TV series aired between 1984 and 1989, starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. A previous film adaptation was released in 2006, directed by Michael Mann and starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
The new Universal film will be shot for IMAX and is expected to hit theaters on May 20, 2028.
