Gareth Edwards is leaving the Jurassic World universe. The filmmaker, who directed Jurassic World Rebirth, the 2025 movie that revived the franchise, had been confirmed to helm the sequel, but is no longer involved with the project.

According to Deadline, Edwards stepped down as director due to "creative differences" and decided to focus on new original projects. Now, Universal is looking for a new name to lead the follow-up.

The feature will be the fifth in the Jurassic World franchise and the eighth overall in the saga that began with Jurassic Park, with release scheduled for June 9, 2028. There is still no official date for the start of filming.

Jurassic World: Rebirth features a star-studded cast, with Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jonathan Bailey (Wicked) and Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) leading the lineup. The screenplay is by David Koepp, who wrote the original 1993 film, and it is directed by Gareth Edwards, of Godzilla (2014) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Jurassic World: Rebirth takes place five years after Jurassic World: Dominion, and shows that the planet has become practically uninhabitable for dinosaurs, which are growing increasingly sick and dying off. The creatures that still survive seek climates that resemble the environments in which they lived millions of years ago, usually near the Equator. On an island that is not Isla Nublar, a search team must collect DNA from the three largest living dinosaurs, one on land, one in the air, and one in the sea, because they supposedly hold the key to a cure that could bring miraculous benefits to humanity.

The cast also includes Rupert Friend as Martin Krebs, the representative of a major pharmaceutical company, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Reuben Delgado, the father of the stranded family.
