According to Deadline, Glen Powell and Richard Linklater are teaming up for a Lou Gehrig movie at Universal. The actor will play the legendary New York Yankees player, with Linklater directing and Simon Rich writing the screenplay. The project marks the duo’s reunion after Everybody Wants Some!! (2016) and the comedy Hit Man (2023).

Lou Gehrig, known as "The Iron Horse," is one of baseball’s greatest names, with 2,130 consecutive games, six World Series titles, and the Triple Crown in 1934.

His career was cut short by the disease that now bears his name (ALS), and he died in 1941 at age 37. His story has only been told once on the big screen, in the classic The Pride of the Yankees (1942), starring Gary Cooper.

The film will be produced by Lorne Michaels and Erin David (Broadway Video), as well as Powell and Dan Cohen (Barnstorm). Linklater is in talks to produce through Detour Filmproduction. Universal has not yet set a start date for filming, but Powell is planning a break after a packed schedule.

The project is the second from the partnership between Barnstorm and Universal, following The Comeback King (2027). Rich, who wrote the screenplay, recently wrote Artificial, by Luca Guadagnino, with Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman.
