Christopher Nolan Says AI Is "Glass Trojan Horse"

In an interview with the channel Hugo Décrypte, director Christopher Nolan compared artificial intelligence to a "glass Trojan horse", in which "everyone knows the Greeks are inside."

The filmmaker made the statement when asked about the technology amid the controversy involving billionaire Elon Musk, who has been publicly attacking the film The Odyssey and has promised to produce his own AI-made version.

Nolan praised Gen Z's skepticism toward AI, saying that young people's immediate reaction of calling technology-generated content "AI slop" is a healthy sign. "I've never seen a technology advancing so rapidly, so completely rejected by the public. Everyone's suspicion of it is so extreme, particularly young people," said the director, who sees that distrust as the key to getting the best out of the tool.

Nolan's statement comes amid Musk's crusade against The Odyssey. The owner of X and the AI company Grok has criticized what he calls "woke" casting choices in the film, calling Nolan an "anti-white racist" for casting Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy and mocking Elliott Page, who plays Sinon in the production. Musk also promised that his AI tool will produce a feature-length version of The Odyssey that is "historically accurate and true to the art of Homer" by the end of the year.

The director of Doctor Strange, Scott Derrickson, fired back at Musk on social media: "Elon Musk doesn’t know shit about cinema & he stopped reading in his 20s. His opinions on art are worthless." Despite the controversy, The Odyssey opened with $264 million worldwide and continues to sell out screenings months in advance.
