'Battlefield' Film With Michael B. Jordan Bought by Sony
Studio wins dispute against other Hollywood giants.
The battle for the rights to screen the live-action Battlefield movie appears to have finally come to an end. According to TheWrap, Sony has won the bidding war against other studios and is in talks with Electronic Arts to bring the project to the big screen.
Christopher McQuarrie, director of four Mission: Impossible films, will write, direct, and produce an adaptation of the video game franchise, while Michael B. Jordan is on board to produce and possibly star in the film.
The first game in the series, Battlefield 1942 , was released for PC and Mac in 2002. Since then, the franchise has migrated from computer platforms to video game consoles and has tackled scenarios ranging from the Vietnam War to a distant future. Battlefield 6, released last year, was cited as one of the most expensive games ever produced and became the best-selling title of that year (and of the entire franchise).
Battlefield is experiencing a relatively good moment in the gaming world. After years in the shadow of Call of Duty — which will also have a movie — the franchise managed to recover with Battlefield 6 in 2025, which was highly praised by fans and analysts upon its release.
Despite initial success, the following months were more challenging, and in addition to several criticisms from the community, part of the game's development team was cut by Electronic Arts.
