Shortly after the news broke that BioWare would be shutting down, a trailer for Mass Effect 5 — officially titled Universe — was released online. The video, composed mostly of cinematic moments, had its authenticity confirmed by Jason Schreier, a Bloomberg reporter and one of the leading authorities in video game journalism.
Unfortunately, it's quite likely we'll never see much more than this: along with the end of BioWare, the development of the new Mass Effect was canceled by Electronic Arts. The leak, in fact, could sound like an attempt to raise funds to continue the project at a new home.
The company's demise comes after a string of poor results with Mass Effect: Andromeda, Anthem, and the most recent Dragon Age: Veilguard. None of the three received a warm reception from fans, although Veilguard achieved considerable commercial success.
The closure of operations is, of course, also linked to the purchase of EA by a Saudi Arabian fund, which should cause very significant changes in how one of the world's largest publishers will operate in the coming years.
