'GTA 6' NPCs Will be More Reactive Towards Guns and Street Fights

Anyone looking to carry weapons while playing GTA 6 won’t have an easy time of it. According to Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, the new entry in the franchise will feature NPCs that react if you walk around the streets with a gun in hand.
In an interview with Dazed, Nelson drew a comparison between GTA 5, which “satirized modern life with wacky characters, high-octane car chases, and explosive gunfights,” and Red Dead Redemption 2, which “was hailed as one of the most realistic and immersive games to date, with a slower, more emotional tone suited to its storyline.” According to Nelson, GTA 6 sits right between those two approaches.
The publication describes GTA 6 as a game that brings “all the weapons and supercars you would expect,” but with a world that is more “grounded and reactive” than before. For example, in GTA V, you could “traverse the city like a god” — with your weapon drawn, for instance. But now, “if you walk down the street with a rifle, the city will have something to say about it.”
In previous GTA games, people generally don’t react if you stand next to them or walk past them holding a weapon — not even the police. They only react if you fire it or start aiming in their direction. However, GTA VI appears to bring NPCs with realistic reactions to the display of weapons.
“We look back at our previous games with a critical eye and see where we want to evolve based on what we didn’t do as well as we would have liked to, either because we didn’t have the time, resources or technological capabilities, or in some cases things we just didn’t do as well or consider as fully as we could have”, Nelson said. “A lot of what we do is very iterative – we adjust a lot of things by feel based on what is working and what isn’t.”
Everything you need to know about GTA VI
Once again developed by Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto VI is the first GTA in thirteen years, following the astronomical success of GTA V, released in 2013. The franchise is one of the most successful in video game history.
The story of GTA VI takes place in an open world based on Florida, in the United States. Its setting is Vice City, a fictional version of Miami that debuted in the first GTA and later got its own game with 2002’s GTA Vice City.
GTA VI arrives on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026. A PC version has not yet been announced.
