In an official announcement on the game’s website, ZeniMax Online Studios unveiled a new content roadmap for The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO), reaffirming that the MMORPG "is here to stay" even after losing a significant number of employees in a recent round of layoffs. Game director Nick Giacomini detailed what players can expect in 2026 and 2027.
Many of the most anticipated changes, such as the class overhaul and combat system rework, have been pushed back to 2027 so the team can focus on "quality experiences over calendar dates."
To make up for it, Update 51 arrives on September 28 with new challenges, the Rumors system, and quality-of-life improvements. Rumors is a clue-based exploration system with no map markers, functioning like a treasure hunt and encouraging players to investigate the world on their own. In addition, the update brings achievement pinning and a customizable HUD.

In October, Season Two arrives with solo dungeons, improvements to the Tamriel Tome, and a free DLC. Giacomini acknowledged the frustration the delay may cause, but said: "We’ve had bumps in the road over our 12-year history that we’ve always faced together. As our studio evolves, we are not looking to just “maintain” the game. We are looking to grow it. You, our community, are the reason we have grown over the years, and we want to keep growing with you".

The roadmap also includes a new trial, Crimson Veldt, featuring mounted combat and slated for 2027, as well as the Jerall Pass PvP zone and dynamic encounters in Skyrim.
