Every AI That Appears in 'VisionQuest'
The production premiered this Tuesday with two episodes.
VisionQuest, considered by many and even by Marvel itself as the conclusion of the trilogy that began in WandaVision, gives life and human faces to various Artificial Intelligences that we have come to know throughout the MCU stories, especially in Stark Industries.
Just as Vision (Paul Bettany) is part of an experiment that brought Tony and Bruce Banner together in an attempt to create an artificial being that could stop Ultron, others were also part of the journey and now live in the mind of the series' protagonist.
To better understand each of them, we've listed all the AIs that appear in VisionQuest and will update this list if any more are added.
Vision
The series' protagonist himself is part of this world of Artificial Intelligences; in the character's case, a synthezoid version created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, which ended up having JARVIS's consciousness placed in its body and gained life with the Mind Stone. Vision eventually became one of the Avengers, but was killed when Thanos extracted the stone from his forehead. After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Wanda Maximoff created a reality in which the character lived again and ended up facing his reconstructed version by SWORD, who now stars in VisionQuest to understand his place in the world and within the original Vision's own history.
J.A.R.V.I.S.
The artificial intelligence that had Paul Bettany's voice since the first Iron Man was Tony Stark's great companion in his experiments and the voice inside the hero's armor until the creation of Vision, whom JARVIS calls his brother. James D'Arcy brings the character to life once again, since in Agent Carter, he was the interpreter of the original Jarvis, Howard Stark's butler.
F.R.I.D.A.Y.
After Jarvis became part of Vision's consciousness, Friday took control as Tony Stark's AI partner, participating in the Battle of Sokovia alongside the hero in Age of Ultron. She accompanied Stark until the end, in Endgame, and this relationship is also part of the character's journey in VisionQuest. In the movies, Friday's voice was provided by Kerry Condon, but in the series she will be voiced by actress Orla Brady.
E.D.I.T.H.
Even in death, Tony Stark remains a hero. This is the idea behind the creation of EDITH and also the meaning of its acronym. The artificial intelligence was a legacy left by Stark to Peter Parker after his death, and it emerges with access to satellites and defense systems within the glasses Tony used. Peter ends up handing over the technology when he believes Quentin Beck, Mysterio, and this leads to the major attack we see at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. In VisionQuest she appears as a fearless and action-ready version played by Emily Hampshire.
Dum-E and U
The hydraulic arms that helped Tony Stark build things and were often mistreated by the hero are also remembered in Vision's mind. Dum-E and U were among Stark's first creations, back in his college days, and accompanied the hero through several important moments, such as the creation of the new reactor element to save him from palladium contamination in Iron Man 2. They even survived the destruction of Tony's house in Iron Man 3, and Dum-E went to live with Peter Parker after Stark's death. Henry Lewis plays the "flesh and blood" version of Dum-E in VisionQuest, while U is played by British comedian Jonathan Sayer.
Ultron
Created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner as part of a project to maintain world peace and prevent future events like the Battle of New York, Ultron developed self-awareness and saw humanity as the greatest threat Earth could face. Therefore, he orchestrated a genocide, which led to the Battle of Sokovia. After the Avengers' victory, Vision found Ultron in a nearly destroyed body and seemingly ended the threat. However, in VisionQuest we learn that Ultron lives trapped in Vision's mind, isolated in an attic, but will he accept this for long?
