'The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 Finally Makes Negan and Maggie Allies

No relationship defines The Walking Dead: Dead City more than Negan and Maggie’s. Ever since the spin-off premiered centered on Lauren Cohan’s character hunting down her husband’s killer, the series has used that tension as its dramatic engine, even after the first two seasons forced the pair to work together against their will. In the third season, that dynamic changes: for the first time, the two are genuinely on the same side, with no traps or lingering resentment disguised as a truce.

The question now is what remains of the duo when the conflict that defined them ever since Glenn’s death (Steven Yeun), back in the original series, no longer exists. For Lauren Cohan, the answer involves deconstructing the labels Maggie has carried throughout the franchise long before figuring out how to deal with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

"I always felt like there were these archetypes that needed to be filled: Glenn’s wife, Hershel’s daughter, mother, leader," the actress said in an exclusive interview with Omelete. In the new season, stripping away that identity built on resentment toward Negan sends Maggie into free fall, forcing her to rediscover herself without the certainties that had been holding her up.

Morgan expanded on that idea by explaining the role Negan now takes on: reminding Maggie of her own capabilities. "He shows her that maybe she’s more capable, and a better leader, than anyone else could be," the actor said, describing their current relationship as "kind of a yin and yang situation," where the two work in sync without ceasing to be who they’ve always been.

That dynamic gets a practical counterpoint in the season’s first two episodes, when the group meets new survivors played by Raúl Castillo and Aimee Garcia. Maggie decides to trust Negan’s ability to help this new community, and it is precisely that shared purpose, bigger than either of them, that smooths the rough edges between them.

The result, according to Cohan, is a season with more nuance, supported by a friendship that evolves alongside mutual respect. "We get to serve as mirrors for each other this year," the actress summed up, also highlighting the return of a trait that defined both characters in their earliest appearances in the franchise: humor.
