Half of 'The Rings of Power' Season 3 Will Be Released at Once

Amazon Prime Video has announced the release schedule for the third season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The new season premieres on November 11 with the first four episodes, in a format different from the traditional weekly rollout.

The following episodes will be released in two batches: episodes 5 and 6 on November 18, and the final two, 7 and 8, on November 25. The season will have eight episodes in total. The change in the release model marks something new for the series, which previously followed a one-episode-per-week format. 

The choice to release episodes in batches may be a strategy to cater to different audience profiles. The production remains one of the platform’s most expensive.

The third season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will make a major time jump compared to the second season — check out the official synopsis: "Set many years after the events of season two, season three takes place at the height of the war between the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to forge the One Ring, which will give him the advantage he needs to win the war and conquer Middle-earth."

Within the mythology created by J.R.R. Tolkien, the war of the Elves against Sauron took place during the Second Age of Middle-earth, and it was the first major battle against the villain, played in The Rings of Power by Charlie Vickers. It is a battle that takes place before the conflict seen in the prologue of The Lord of the Rings films.

In addition to Vickers, the third season also brings back Morfydd Clark (Galadriel), Robert Aramayo (Elrond), Ismael Cruz Córdova (Arondir), Owain Arthur (Durin), Daniel Weyman (Gandalf), Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Miriel), Trystan Gravelle (Pharazon), and more. New additions to the cast include Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things) and Eddie Marsan (Ray Donovan), in roles that have not yet been revealed.

Showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay, who have led the series since season one, remain in charge of The Rings of Power. Directors for the third season’s episodes include Charlotte Brändström (Shōgun), Sanaa Hamri (The Wheel of Time), and Stefan Schwartz (The Boys).

The new season premieres on November 11.
