'Ted Lasso' Actresses Explain Pivotal Scene Between Alice and Gemma
Tanya Reynolds and Abbie Hern discuss the characters' relationship and the fear of giving up soccer.
The relationship between Alice (Tanya Reynolds) and Gemma (Abbie Hern) gained new importance in the final episodes of Ted Lasso's fourth season. After spending much of the year torn between soccer and a possible career in law, Gemma sees all her choices in a new light when she suffers a knee injury.
In an exclusive interview with Omelete, Hern explained that the character's dilemma represents a reality faced by many athletes who still cannot live exclusively from their sport. "The episode does a perfect job of showing all the difficulties that women in the second division face, whether it's time, money... It's a huge commitment," she stated. "It was fun to explore this side of Gemma, who doesn't want to give up anything and needs to balance two gigantic commitments in life."
The conflict is further complicated by Alice. Before becoming a coach, she was also a player, but had to leave the field due to knee injuries. “For Alice, playing soccer was her whole world. It was all she wanted and she was obsessed with it. She is still grieving the fact that she can no longer do it professionally because of the injuries,” Reynolds explained.
That's why watching Gemma hesitate about the future is particularly painful. “Alice knows how much potential Gemma has, how talented she is, and how far she could go if she really committed. Seeing Gemma thinking 'maybe I will, maybe I won't' is agony for Alice. It's torture. She thinks, 'My God, you don't know what you have.'”
When Gemma also injures her knee, however, the relationship between the two takes on an even more personal dimension.
Hern believes that his character reacts to the situation by making an impulsive decision.
“Gemma makes big, bold decisions without thinking too much. Probably guided by fear,” she explained. “I think the decision to give up comes more from a flight response than a fight. She hurts her knee and gives up.”
Alice, on the other hand, is a meticulous planner – and that's exactly what Gemma needs at that moment. "She trusts Alice to think ahead: okay, you can't play right now, but don't run away from it. There are things we can do to solve this. Gemma knows and feels that Alice is right, she just needs someone who can think a little beyond what's happening at that instant."
For Reynolds, the conversation also serves as the moment when Alice's feelings for Gemma finally become clear.
“It’s as if she were saying, ‘This is why you frustrate me. I can see how much potential you have and how much you love this. It’s very difficult to build a career here, and you really have the opportunity to have a great career. Seeing you consider throwing it all away before you even know what the situation is is very triggering for Alice.’”
The coach, however, doesn't want to simply force Gemma to choose football.
"She says something quite fair: if you love the law as much as this, fine, go do that. But if you're doing it only because you're afraid—and I think you are—then pull yourself together, get an MRI, and get back in the field."
