Dan Stevens Wants 'RoboCop' Prime Video Series to Have the Original Tone

Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey, Legion), Alex Murphy in the RoboCop reboot from Prime Video, has a clear idea of what he hopes for in the character’s new version, which will be produced by Blumhouse/Atomic Monster. In an interview with Comic Book, he said he hopes the series will “preserve” two specific elements from the original films.

“The original is one of my favorite movies of all time. For me and many of my friends, it was an iconic film,” the actor said. “I think it may have been one of my first encounters with extreme violence and also with satire. I think that’s what excites me most, and I hope we can preserve those elements.”

Stevens joined the cast just under two months after Amazon officially greenlit the project, which will have Peter Ocko (The Office, Elementary) as showrunner.

Rather than positioning itself as a continuation of the original films, the new series will rework the premise of a major corporate conglomerate convincing the city of Detroit to put a robotic police officer on the streets.

"RoboCop" is built from the body of Alex Murphy, a hero cop who was killed in the line of duty. The role was played by Peter Weller and Robert Burke in three films released between 1987 and 1993, and by Joel Kinnaman in the 2014 remake directed by Brazilian filmmaker José Padilha.

The new series does not yet have a release date.
