In testimony before the California Assembly Committee, producer Betsy Beers revealed that the new Grey's Anatomy spin-off will no longer be filmed in the state. The series, which takes place in West Texas, will be produced in Albuquerque, New Mexico, marking the first time the franchise has left California in 23 years.

The change occurred after ABC and 20th Television had their tax credit request denied twice. The refusal forced the studio to postpone the series premiere, which will no longer take place in the middle of the 2027 season and has been moved to the 2027-28 season. Created by Shonda Rhimes and Meg Marinis, the plot follows a rural medical team in Texas.

Beers criticized the unpredictability of the state's tax incentive system, which has an annual limit of $750 million. "We were denied because we weren't offering enough jobs for the state to consider us an asset. None of our track record was taken into account," she stated. According to her, the second application attempt was rejected on the grounds that new programs couldn't compete. "We lost staff, we lost a lot of time, and we lost money trying to find a way to stay where we've always been. Now we're filming in Albuquerque, where they've been wonderful to work with, but we want to be here."

Executive producers include Rhimes, Beers, Marinis, and Ellen Pompeo. The project is already in pre-production in New Mexico.
