Ryan Murphy Reaffirms Wish to Reboot Musical Hit 'Glee'

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Murphy, creator of Glee, opened the door to a possible reboot of the musical series. More than 11 years after the production ended, the showrunner revealed that renewed interest from younger audiences, who discovered the series through streaming, made him rethink the idea.

"It’s something to consider. For many, many people now in their 20s, they grew up on that show and it meant something to them. The music meant something," Murphy said. "So, let’s kick it around and see what we get. It’s always about the story for me. What’s the story? Do I want to tell the story now? Sometimes I want to wait".

The creator also addressed practical issues that weigh on his creative decisions. "To me, it’s always about how the scripts come in and what it costs. You have to be conscious about all of that," he said. "But because I have such great partners, I’m able to create things that give thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of people jobs. We need to bring production back to LA. We have to figure out: How do we make shows in L.A. so that people who came here and worked here can be with their families and not have to go out of state?"

Glee premiered in 2009 on Fox and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The series followed the experiences of the glee club at the fictional William McKinley High School in Ohio, and tackled themes such as identity, diversity, bullying, and acceptance through versions of major hit songs.

Across six seasons and more than 120 episodes, airing through 2015, the production launched dozens of actors, including Lea Michele, Darren Criss, and Chris Colfer. The series earned six Emmy Awards and four Golden Globes, in addition to breaking an Elvis Presley record by landing 113 songs on the Billboard Hot 100.

Despite the enthusiasm, Murphy did not give details about the format of the possible reboot, nor did he confirm whether the original cast would return or whether it would be a new incarnation. "I'm considering a lot of stuff," he summed up. "I think I'm in a development phase".
