Former 'Fire Country' Showrunner Justifies Death of Fan-Favorite Character

In an interview with Us Weekly, former Fire Country showrunner Tia Napolitano explained the reasons behind Cara Maisonette’s death in the series’ second season, a decision that caught fans off guard and left actress Sabina Gadecki devastated.

According to Napolitano, the goal was to raise the drama and further complicate the lives of the characters left behind in Edgewater, especially firefighter Jake Crawford and Cara’s biological daughter, Genevieve.

The character’s exit happened during a fire tornado, when the nurse was impaled and suffered a fatal brain hemorrhage. Napolitano explained that the death was planned to shake up the narrative and fundamentally alter the course of the series. "It’s very difficult because Sabina Gadecki is so sweet and such a wonderful actress and we love having her on our show," she told the outlet. "But when I pitched this season originally, Genevieve was really the soapy center of it. Then we want to lean into and complicate that as much as we possibly could,”

The former showrunner also pointed out that the timing was intentional, coming just as Cara and Jake were solidifying their future together. "We made them much stronger," she said. "It feels like she’s going to stay and become part of the fabric of our show. The intention is always to take that away from the audience so they feel the loss the way the characters do."

Gadecki told Us Weekly that she received the news during a call from Napolitano in December 2023, shortly before production began on the second season. The actress knew that these conversations with the showrunner usually meant bad news, and recalled thinking: "Please don’t let this be that call." The moment Napolitano mentioned wanting to discuss her character’s arc, Gadecki already knew what was coming.

Having those extra months allowed Gadecki to process the news in private before it spread to the rest of the Fire Country team. "I feel grateful that they honored my character the way they did," she reflected. "Even if it destroys me inside."

The series follows Bode Donovan, a young convict seeking redemption, who joins an unconventional prison firefighting program in Northern California, where he and other inmates partner with firefighters. The cast includes Max Thieriot, Kevin Alejandro, Jordan Calloway, Jules Latimer, Diane Farr, Stephanie Arcila, Billy Burke and W. Tré Davis.

Fire Country has been renewed by CBS for the 2026-2027 season and is available for streaming on Paramount+ and Netflix.
