'Avatar: Seven Havens' Refreshes Franchise By Giving the Avatar a New Reputation
The series takes us back to the world of benders.
Anyone who has ever seen any version of Avatar knows the maxim very well: the Avatar is responsible for bringing balance to the world. The birth and rise of an avatar has always represented hope and strength for humanity – until now. In Avatar: Seven Havens, we see the plot completely destroy the Avatar's reputation, placing the once symbol of peace in the position of executioner of humanity.

This time, neither the Fire Nation nor power-hungry bureaucrats threaten the world—because they no longer exist. All that remains of what we knew from Avatar is a world devastated by a cataclysm, which everyone believes was caused by Korra. Because of this, the Avatar has come to be branded as the destroyer of humanity, not its savior.
It is in this world that a girl with the powers of the Avatar emerges. Hunted by human and spiritual enemies, she and her long-lost twin sister must unravel their mysterious origins and save all Seven Refuges before the last bastions of civilization crumble before a new and mysterious power. And this could not be a better way to reclaim this universe.
Let's be honest, a new Avatar saving their civilization right now wouldn't be a great addition to the franchise. We've already seen that happen in two very different eras with diverse problems. Repeating the same formula would be like trying to feed franchise fans cheap nostalgia. Here, we have the chance to look at a familiar universe from a very different perspective and with confidence in the quality of the work of creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, who return in this new production.
Avatar: Seven Havens premieres on Paramount+ on October 9, with three episodes. The remaining chapters will be released on October 16, 23, and 30.
