New 'Star Trek' Movie Will Be a Mix of 'Training Day and 'Crimson Tide' in Space

Star Trek fans are eagerly awaiting the return of Gene Roddenberry’s universe to theaters, but so far, little has been revealed about the new film to be directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the duo behind Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. During SDCC, they said the new production will not feature classic characters, and have now revealed the inspirations behind the story.

In a conversation on the podcast The Discourse, while promoting their new Apple TV film Mayday, Daley and Goldstein said they are less focused on which continuity or timeline to follow. “It’s more about how to bring this franchise to audiences who don’t necessarily consider themselves Star Trek fans. What can we do that hasn’t been done yet?” Goldstein explained.

He also said that the duo is focusing on Starfleet, the organization that has always been the foundation of Star Trek. “Our approach is to look at it from the perspective of: what is this Starfleet institution that lies at the heart of Star Trek? And what would happen if things weren’t going well within that institution? The movie we use as a comparison is Training Day”, he said.

“And Crimson Tide,” Daley added. “Those are the two we use as our spiritual touchstones.”
