The art book for Spider-Man: Brand New Day sparked controversy among fans after one of its concept art pieces showed signs of AI use. The image "Big City, Little Spider," created by artist Scott McInnes, features distortions and strange shapes in buildings and taxis, including two vehicles that appear to merge while facing opposite directions. The visual artifacts, such as a fire escape with warped shapes, are similar to common flaws seen in AI-generated images.

McInnes has previously worked on other Marvel projects, including The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as productions like Gladiator 2, Wonka, and Barbie. Although the signs point to the use of AI, it is possible that the distortions are the result of techniques such as photobashing or Photoshop's Content-Aware Fill tool, which fills empty spaces based on the surrounding area.

The controversy comes at a time when Marvel has already faced criticism for using AI in Secret Invasion, whose opening sequence was artificially generated. Recently, the studio also laid off members of its visual development team, including concept artists, which led fans to associate the cuts with the advance of the technology, although the company has not confirmed that connection.
