Lionsgate and the international distributors of Mutiny are seeking compensation from Amazon after the film was mistakenly made available on Prime Video days before its theatrical release. The feature, starring Jason Statham, was available to stream for more than two hours, which is said to have already caused losses estimated in the millions of dollars.
According to Deadline, the film, which has a $50 million budget, is already circulating on piracy sites, which could significantly impact its box office performance. Lionsgate paid an eight-figure sum for the U.S. distribution rights and is now demanding financial compensation from Amazon. Movie theater chains have also reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with what happened.
An international buyer interviewed by Deadline called the situation "unprecedented" and said distributors expect Amazon to write a check to help resolve the issue. One person involved in the production said there could be "serious repercussions for distributors".
In the story, Statham plays Cole Reed, a man whose billionaire boss is murdered right in front of him. Reed is framed for the crime and must go on the run while uncovering an international conspiracy.
Mutiny opens in theaters on September 10.
