'Ready Player Two', Directed by Steven Spielberg, is Still in Development

Fans of Ready Player One, the adaptation of Ernest Cline's book directed by Steven Spielberg, have been waiting for news about a sequel for years, but it never got off the ground. During the red carpet for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, screenwriter Zak Penn shared a hopeful update.

"I'm working on it," Penn said about Ready Player Two in an interview with The Direct. It's worth noting that back in 2020, Ernest Cline had already said he was in talks with Warner Bros. for the adaptation of the sequel, but that he was still "waiting to see."

Ready Player One grossed more than $600 million worldwide.

The story follows young Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), who escapes his dull life by logging into the OASIS. When the game's eccentric billionaire creator dies, he leaves his enormous fortune as the prize in an elaborate treasure hunt. Wade joins the competition against players from all over the world and soon discovers that he'll have to face corporate villains and ruthless rivals who will do anything—both in the OASIS and in the real world—to find the treasure first.

The cast also includes Ben Mendelsohn (Nolan Sorrento), Simon Pegg (Ogden Morrow), Mark Rylance (James Donovan Halliday), T.J. Miller (i-R0k), Hannah John-Kamen (F'Nale Zandor), Olivia Cooke (Samatha Evelyn Cook, Art3mis), and Simone Kirby (Loretta).
