Marvel Studios is heartbroken to learn of the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart, the legendary English actor who brought Professor Charles Xavier to life. He was 86.

Stewart made his debut as Professor X in 2000’s X-Men, where he embodied the composure, class, and wisdom of the beloved telepathic mutant and mentor of the X-Men. For more than 25 years, he brought a gravitas and profundity to the role, earning fans across the globe and helping to transform Super Hero storytelling forever.

He reprised the role in multiple X-Men films, culminating with an unforgettable performance in 2017’s Logan. In 2022, Stewart joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as an alternate-universe Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He returned to the role once more with 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday, his final on-screen appearance.

Back in 2000, Stewart took on the role of Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men: The Movie alongside Ian McKellen as Magneto. The partnership was repeated in X-Men 2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) and Logan (2017), in addition to participating in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and The Wolverine (2013).

After that, Patrick Stewart finally entered the MCU. First, he played a variant of his Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and now he is confirmed in the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, which premieres in December and will be his first posthumous film.
