Netflix has fired Dan Lin, head of its film division, after just over two years in the role. The information was confirmed by Variety. Lin took over the position in 2024, replacing Scott Stuber, who had led the area since 2017.
The departure comes amid abroad restructuring at the company, following a wave of layoffs that affected approximately 6% of its workforce. The cuts primarily impacted the product, technology, legal, and human resources teams, but also reached key executives in the content area.
Another important change was the departure of Bela Bajaria from her position as head of content at Netflix. To replace her, the company hired Peter Rice, a former executive at Disney and Fox.
Who will replace Dan Lin?
To date, Netflix has not announced who will take over the leadership of its film division. According to information released by Variety, an announcement regarding the new leadership should be made in the coming days.
Among the names speculated for the role are Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, former executives of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group. However, this possibility has not been officially confirmed.
In the days leading up to Lin's departure, the restructuring also affected Doug Belgrad , his main collaborator in the film division, and Sheroum Kim , who was responsible for the platform's independent film division.
Dan Lin's career on Netflix
Before taking his position at Netflix, Dan Lin built a career as a producer and entrepreneur at the helm of Rideback, the production company responsible for projects such as The LEGO Movie franchise, the adaptations of It , and the Sherlock Holmes films.
During his tenure at Netflix, Lin took charge of the platform's film strategy. In an interview with The New York Times in June, he stated that he had approved or acquired 88 films for the service up to that point.
Among the projects mentioned were Apex , Emilia Pérez , Here Comes the Flood , The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth , and Narnia: The Magician's Nephew , directed by Greta Gerwig.
Lin's departure comes on top of changes in content leadership and staff cuts, at a time when Netflix is reorganizing its strategy for its film productions.
