Mamma Mia! 3 is "Inevitable," Says Amanda Seyfried

In an interview with USA Today, Amanda Seyfried spoke about the possibility of a Mamma Mia! 3. The actress, who plays Sophie in the musical, said that the third film seems "inevitable," but revealed that the project doesn't yet have a script.

Producer Judy Craymer "wants to do it" the film and "would do anything to get us together," according to Seyfried. "I remember us saying, like, it can't be another 10 years till we do another one. And it's been, next year will be 10 years since we shot the last one, so I'm like, what is happening'", she said. Despite the excitement, she was honest about the delay. "I wish there was a script. I feel like we're all kind of too busy right now."

The biggest challenge is dealing with the death of Donna, Meryl Streep's character , who died in the plot of the second film. "We just need to figure out how to get Meryl in there. So, if anyone has any ideas, it would be helpful. Because she's dead. Not my idea!" Seyfried joked.

Regarding Sophie's future, the actress said she would like to see the character with a larger family, a second child, and perhaps a new marriage. "The modern, mixed family. It's always important to see that, I think, for people," she stated.

She also suggested that Dominic Cooper, who plays her husband Sky, "could just be a friend." Seyfried also mentioned that her own daughter was a baby during the filming of the sequel and that she would love to see her participate in the third film. "It would be really nice, because she really loves it."

Speculation about a third film gained momentum in February when Donna Langley, president of NBCUniversal Entertainment, told Deadline that there would be a Mamma Mia! 3 .

Released in 2008 and 2018, the two films in the Mamma Mia! saga follow Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) and her mother, Donna (Meryl Streep and Lily James, in different phases of their lives), during their romantic misadventures on a paradisiacal Greek island. The story is set to the music of ABBA.

Together, Mamma Mia! and Here We Go Again grossed over $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office.
