Peter Safran Confirms 'Clayface' Connection to 'Creature Commandos'

Peter Safran and James Gunn are delivering on their promise to keep the DCU canon consistent across films, series, and games. At least that’s what Safran says about Clayface, the next DC Studios film starring Tom Rhys Harries.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the DCU boss alongside James Gunn confirmed that the events of Clayface take place before the events of Creature Commandos in canon, and that the version of the character we meet in the HBO Max animated series is the same Matt Hagen we’ll see in theaters.

It’s worth noting that the film will mark the DCU’s first cinematic appearance of Gotham City. Check out the trailer reveals.

A classic Batman villain, Clayface has had several different versions in the comics. The most famous one, immortalized by the episode "Feat of Clay" from Batman: The Animated Series, is the one that will headline the horror film directed by James Watkins.

Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) wrote the script for Clayface, following a rising actor named Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries) whose face is disfigured by a gangster. 

As a last resort, he turns to a scientist (Naomi Ackie) with questionable methods in an attempt to restore his original face. Using a chemical formula, Hagen heals his scars, but is transformed into an aberration of science. Also in the cast, in still-undisclosed roles, are actors Max Minghella (The Social Network) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad).

Clayface hits theaters on October 23.
